Understanding Early Foot Development

Children’s feet are constantly growing and developing, and even small problems can affect how they walk, run, and play.

In the early stages of life, a baby’s foot consists mostly of flexible cartilage rather than hard bone. Because they are so soft and pliable, they can be easily damaged or permanently misaligned by external pressures, such as shoes or socks that are too small or restrictive.

Foot Development Timeline

The growth rate of a young foot is remarkable; a baby’s foot will typically double in size by the age of one. By the age of six, a child’s foot structure and walking pattern begin to resemble those of an adult. However, the ossification process, where cartilage fully transforms into bone, is not complete until around age 18. This extended developmental window means their feet remain fragile and susceptible to structural imbalances for nearly two decades.

Protect & Preserve: Preventive Care

Early and regular examination of a child’s feet is the best preventative measure, particularly when they start walking, to ensure proper development. At Foot Pain Centres of Leeds, our Children’s Podiatry Service focuses on identifying and treating foot and lower limb concerns early, helping to support healthy development and prevent future problems.

Using a gentle, child-friendly approach, our Podiatrists provide expert advice, treatment, and, where needed, tailored management plans to keep your child active and comfortable.

When to Seek Podiatry Advice (Key Warning Signs)

Consult a Podiatrist if you notice any of these signs:
  • Uneven shoe wear
  • Recurrent pain in the feet, legs, or lower back
  • Constant tripping or falling
  • Presence of hard skin, corns, or enlarged joints (like bunions)
  • Nighttime leg pain.

The Podiatry Solution: Comprehensive Screening

Podiatrists are experts in foot and ankle movement and its effects on the lower limbs, hips, and spine. We offer a full gait and posture assessment to highlight any biomechanical problems. Treatment may involve custom prescription orthotics (made from a plaster foot cast) and, when necessary, a co-managed assessment with a specialist Chiropractor or Physiotherapist.

Children in Sport

As children start to participate in sports and become more active, foot and lower limb problems associated with exercise can occur. When injuries occur, children are no different from adults in this respect; they tend to heal more quickly and not to rest when injured and therefore need to be monitored carefully.

Growth, possible weight gain and increased exercise contribute to a wide range of painful foot and lower limb conditions. We treat every physical complaint with the seriousness it deserves and secure a diagnosis as quickly as possible. When you fail to recognise or treat these symptoms, which parents and coaches often mislabel as “growing pains”, you risk causing long-term physical issues for the child. Left unaddressed, these problems can ultimately prevent young athletes from reaching their true sporting potential.

Most problems can be readily managed by your Podiatrist in combination with other treatments if required:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Gentle massage
  • Orthotics
  • Footwear Advice

Treatment may also require periods of rest. Often, the problem can be solved with footwear advice alone. Very young children may regard the problem as the norm and not complain. All aches and pains in children should be taken seriously and investigated professionally, particularly during periods of active growth.

Many young athletes visit our clinics with overuse injuries sparked by excessive training. Often, these injuries happen because the athlete has a hidden predisposition to getting hurt—something that could have been identified through a musculoskeletal examination before they even started their sport.

We try to stress to all coaches that all young athletes, whatever their sport, are offered a professional screening programme which may well highlight an underlying issue that may affect the low back, hip, knee joint, foot and ankle.

Common Conditions Helped by Orthotics

Prescription Orthotics can effectively help manage and treat many common childhood conditions, including:

  • Sever’s disease
  • Osgood–Schlatter disease
  • Flat feet
  • In-toe / Out-toe walking
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Tip-toe walking
