Musculoskeletal Podiatry: Our Holistic Approach to Body Mechanics.

At Foot Pain Centres of Leeds, our musculoskeletal (MSK) podiatry examinations use advanced biomechanics to identify the root causes of your discomfort.

Whether you experience pain in the feet, ankles, knees, or lower back, we analyse the “chain reaction” of structural events that impact your major joints and muscle groups.

What Happens During a Biomechanical Assessment?

Our specialists conduct a comprehensive evaluation that goes far beyond the feet. We begin with a detailed medical history before performing a thorough physical examination of both the upper and lower limbs. This process allows us to measure your walking and running patterns while studying the vital relationship between your joints, muscles, and nerves.

Gait Analysis

In complex cases, such as recovery from a stroke, orthopaedic trauma rehabilitation, and neurological conditions, we utilise video gait analysis. By capturing footage and stills for slow-motion review, our podiatrists can pinpoint subtle mechanical faults. This data provides a baseline to objectively measure your improvement over time.

Comprehensive Postural Screening

Postural alignment dictates how you move. Our weight-bearing examinations assess the impact of gravity, body weight and mass on your skeleton. We meticulously evaluate:

  • Head, Jaw, and Neck: Tilt, rotation, and alignment.

  • Shoulders and Spine: Tilt, rotation, arm length and low back positioning.

  • Pelvis and Hips: Pelvic tilt/rotation and functional or anatomical leg length discrepancies.

  • Lower Limbs: Knee, ankle, and foot positioning.

Precision Measurements for Custom Orthotics

A detailed examination is undertaken of the following areas and the mechanical inter-relationship that they have with each other, together with both muscular and neurological testing.

Foot and Ankle – Leg and Knee – Thigh and Hip – Pelvis and Spine – Neck and Head

Biomechanical measurements are then taken around the foot and ankle, both standing and lying down, with similar measurements around the knee and hip joint. Any differences in functional or anatomical leg differences are also measured. These measurements, once interpreted, will form the numeric prescription that is used to formulate an orthotic device.

The last major joint that supports our skeleton is the ankle joint. To fully appreciate the compensatory mechanical changes that apply to the foot and ankle and the biomechanical effects they may have on the rest of the skeleton, it is vital that we are able to diagnose the primary structural underlying fault that is occurring, which is contributing to your injury or complaint.

For those patients who present with sports-related injuries, it is essential to be able to see you actively performing your sport, e.g., assessing a golf swing or cycling on a static frame.

Often, other musculoskeletal practitioners involved in your treatment are invited to be present at your biomechanical assessment, e.g., a chiropractor or physiotherapist who will contribute their knowledge to the complete overall understanding of your injury.

Specialist Care for Athletes and Complex Injuries

For sports-related injuries, we believe in seeing you in action. Whether it is assessing your golf swing or observing your posture on a static cycling frame, we tailor our assessment to your specific discipline.
