Case Study: Overcoming Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease
A recent patient presented at our Leeds clinic with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited degenerative neuropathy. For most of his life, he relied on heavy Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) and restrictive, custom-made hospital footwear.
The Clinical Challenge: The patient suffered from marked ankle instability, foot drop, and a “foot slap” gait that caused frequent tripping. Additionally, standing all day at work led to chronic lower back pain, muscle wasting, and a significant loss of sensation in his feet. He sought a solution that would allow him to wear standard high-street footwear and improve his stability without bulky braces.
The Solution & Results: Following a six-week intensive programme involving combined Podiatric and Chiropractic neurological assessments and treatment with casted functional orthotics, the results were transformative:
Enhanced Mobility: He successfully dispensed with his AFO braces.
Footwear Freedom: He now wears standard work boots purchased from a high-street shop.
Pain Relief: His chronic lower back pain has been completely resolved.
Improved Sensation: He reports improved feeling in his feet and a significantly more upright, stable gait pattern.
